What’s a Ticker Tape Parade?

If I ran the world, there would be a parade every morning. Parades are awesome. It’s almost impossible to be unhappy on a day when you go to a parade. Just try it. We'd have one to celebrate the grand opening of anything even if it was a mange website, or just the fact that a lot of people are having a birthday.

However, it got me wondering, what does "ticker-tape parade" mean. Sure, it's the expression people use to define almost any kind of parade. According to wikipedia it's a parade in a city where people throw shredded paper from tall buildings. This doesn't happen that often anymore, but it really should. I had seen all of the confetti raining down but I had no idea where it was coming from. According to this list, there's only been 3 in new York City since 2000. Two were for the Yankees and one was for the Giants.
