I was pleasantly surprised with the Valentine's Day page at wikipedia. It had a lot of links that I hadn't looked at before, most of which were totally suited for the holiday celebration of a sarcastic person like me. It also lead me to a page called Vinegar valentines. The examples they listed were from the early 1900's. I love how ornate and beautiful these cards are. A lot of care went into them and then you get to the message and it's like a poetic colon cleanse. Just goes to show that even back then there were sarcastic people who hated Valentine's Day.
These are insulting cards complete with a demeaning caricature. It also includes a poem mocking whatever the category the person belongs to. Wikipedia listed spinster as an example but really Valentine's Day is already hard enough for spinsters. Apparently they also made an appearance in the Calvin and Hobbes comics. I have to say I'm really in love with the idea of giving Valentines that are sarcastic. I probably won't actually be brave enough to do it but I'll think about it in my head. Has anyone else heard of these?
