I guess I had never heard of them because I live so far away from the water. This tradition according to wikipedia originated between 1830-1890. The sailors would bring home little souvenirs; usually boxes and sea shells. Apparently, there wasn't a glue gun on board because it’s thought that the sailors just bought these in Barbados. It was just a really sweet thought. Usually I think of sailors as very rough so I loved the idea of them carrying home something for their beloved.
