Where have all the anvils gone?

Being the brilliant conversationalist that I am, I hate it when there are awkward lulls of silence. To combat this, I always bring up a conversation topic from "Gilmore Girls". Where have all the anvils gone?

There used to be thousands of them, so many that they were popularized in cartoons. They couldn't have been melted down because the entire purpose of the anvil was to resist heat. However, I've never seen an anvil in my entire life. So I ask you, where have all the anvils gone?
