I've heard that the first can opener was invented years after the
tin can. This left me wondering if people just had tin cans sitting on their shelves wondering, "Man I really wish that someone would invent a way to open the tomato sauce, it's been sitting there for ten years."
The tin can was
patented in 1810. The can opener wasn't invented until 1858. (Notice how I didn't say that these people were probably boys
sheesh). Until that point tin cans were opened with knives, chisels, rocks or hammers.
