I was watching the movie "The Prize Winner of Defiance Ohio", which is based on a book called "The Prize Winner of Defiance Ohio". Both the book & the movie are about a woman called Evelyn Ryan who supported her family of ten kids by winning contests for things like writing commercial jingles. She did all of this while living with an abusive husband.
One of the more poignant parts of the film is when she wins enough money to save the house so her family doesn't have to be split up. She also wins a trip to Texas I think. She talks about how this was the first time she ever ate a meal that she hadn't cooked, or slept in a bed that she hadn't made. It made me want to buy a trip to a nice place like the Paris Las Vegas just for all of the unappreciated work they do. The book was written by Evelyn's daughter Terry.
This blog has the title random facts, so I better throw in a random fact. In the movie, Julianne Moore wears some of the dresses that actually belonged to Evelyn Ryan.
