Can I Boil an Egg in the Microwave?
The short version is: no matter what other sites tell you, do not do this.
Here is the long version:
I have always heard that eggs explode when they are put in the microwave. I thought it sounded like a cool but dangerous concept. However, on almost every "how to" style site there were instructions on how to do this. I hate boiling eggs but love to eat them.
I've tried this a few times over the years and it has worked although the texture has been a little bit off which is why I haven't done it more. The instructions are always slightly different with some adding vinegar to the water and others requiring a bath in cold water afterward.
So today I decided to quickly just boil an egg in the microwave. I looked up the instructions and started it. Fast forward a few minutes. The egg exploded and it was so strong it sounded like gun shot. The microwave door flipped open and it spread egg all the way across the entire kitchen. I did not know one egg could be that messy. There was a shell near the opposite wall.
The microwave isn't working any longer either and I'll have to replace it most likely. At least I wasn't standing anywhere near it. Even though the same instructions have worked in the past it's too big of a risk and I won't be doing this again.
