I really started thinking about the term grit when the Matt Damon movie True Grit came out. Sure, I know what grits are but this is something different. I always thought of as grit as an actual grain of dirt, so it didn't make much sense in the context of someone's character. In today's culture I would assume that it means you are unstoppable, whether you're trying to get a job or find disability insurance.

Even though I'm from the west I've only heard this in movies. Has anyone else heard this expression besides just on film?
