I learned this fact on the Food Network between commercials for mortgage lenders. Wikipedia kinda confirmed this. Wikipedia said this might be true but Wikipedia wasn't sure. However, I choose to believe the Food Network because they air Ace of Cakes.Apparently Italian monks invented pretzels in 610 A.D as a reward for kids who learned their prayers. (Pretiola means little rewards.) The stripes of dough were folded to resemble arms cross the chest or prayer.
