What does Auld Lang Syne mean?

Since I don't even know the words to Auld Lang Syne, I've never really stopped to think about what it meant. I always just thought that it was like one of those junior high English assignments where you're supposed to interpret poetry. The teacher always said, there is no wrong answer, even if you answered golf shoes. I went over to wikipedia & found out that:

  • Auld Lang Syne was written by Robert Burns. Similar phrase is used in poems by Robert Ayton, Allan Ramsay, & James Watson.
  • Matthew Fitt used the phrase auld lang syne in fairytales to mean "Once Upon a time"
  • The Scots title can be translated loosely to mean "old long since", "long long ago" or "days gone by"

Basically, not even wikipedia knows what it means. What does Auld Lang Syne mean to you?

It means me weeping uncontrollably at the end of It's A Wonderful Life. That's what it means. It also conjurs images of old people for me - as they are usually the only ones that know the words.
