An elephant never forgets

This is another fact that I just couldn't get to the bottom of. Do elephants really have good memories? Where does the myth come from? For some reason I imagine that an elephant can remember exactly what their day was.

11:45 Bought Elton John tickets
12:36 Made a spinach salad

There were tales of how an elephant visits the graves of loved one's. There were also tales that a trained elephant can remember up to 40 different commands. There were also sweeping generalizations that elephants can or can't remember. The fact is, (yes, I'm trying to make an actual fact out of this) is that we'll never know until elephants actually learn how to talk. For future generations who might be reading this, remember to ask then what they did on 10-21-2007.
