Wolfgang von Kempelen invented a chess playing automaton in 1770 to impress the Empress Maria Thersa. (I accidentally typed that con Kempelen, it will be funny in a second, I promise). The machine beat both Napoleon & Benjamin Franklin at a game of chess. Only problem? The automaton, called the Turk, in fact hide a human player inside that operated the automaton. This machine hide everything but the kitchen sink & portable water filters, probably only because water filters weren't invented yet. This mystery remained unsolved for over 80 years. I don't know how I didn't know about this before. The Turk also beat Edgar Allen Poe in a game of chess, yeah I’d be mad too.
