When I was a kid I would always read about the word fortnight in books. The characters would always be going somewhere cool like an olden time Kissimmee vacation, & they would say that they'd be gone for a fortnight. For awhile, I thought a fortnight was a place.
Eventually, I used context clues to figure out it was a measurement of time. I've been wondering this for several decades now, so today I finally got around to looking it up. A fortnight=14 nights. Why they don't just say "two weeks" is beyond me. However, I am now going to go plan a lot of two week vacations so that I can say that I'll be gone for a fortnight. Ah, finally being able to say that word was well worth the wait.
