When I was a kid I always thought that my holidays were barren because we never had a yule log. That was probably because I never knew what a yule log was so I couldn't really ask for one. No one else ever seemed to know either. Not even the grown ups.
Apparently, the yule log dates back to germanic pagan rituals. It has something to do with a winter solstice fire festival. Personally, I just thought it was to keep the house warm.
The more modern tradition is to have the Yule log on DVD. What I couldn't find out is why exactly this tradition transferred to our modern day celebrations. At least I take comfort in the fact that apparently no one else knows either. Now I have to go sit in front of the fireplace DVD that I received last Christmas. I wish I was making that up but I'm not.
