The Christmas cards I get always seem to wish me a happy Yule Tidings. Since I couldn't figure out what a yule log is, I decided just to focus on the word Yule. Surely that shouldn't be so difficult. This begged the question, what is a yule?
Yule was a germanic pagan winter festival. (That seems to be a common theme with every single Christmas tradition I look up.) The word Yule also means jolly. It can also be thought to mean December or January which would correspond to the first yule. It might even mean wheel or chain link. So basically, no one knows about that one either.
