Who Said This?

I've been trying to track down a quote that might be my new favorite but first I really just need to figure out who said it.

It's "Life is hard. It's even harder if you're stupid". I've seen this attributed to John Wayne. However, I just can't quite picture him saying this for some reason. However, I hope it's true. Has anyone else heard this quote before?
