I had never heard of the color cyan until the 90's when we got a color monitor for our computer. That's right, color...on the computer. Now the paint program had actual colors from the rainbow instead of just different shades of gray. That was the first time I learned about the color cyan. It's not a color that I noticed in my day to day life and as far as I can tell was only made up for my computer monitor. (A wikipedia search reveals that cyan is actually Greek so it's been around longer then I thought).
I also didn't learn how to say it properly until I was like 27. (Read: this morning.) It's one of those words that I've always read but avoided saying because in my head it would obey the same rules as cayenne pepper but other people were saying it differently. A quick internet search reveals that it should be pronounced sigh-ann. So I went off to flickr to see if cyan occurred anywhere else than on computer monitors.
