I have often read about the chignon hairdo in various historical romance novels. Don't ask me how to pronounce it, hopefully I'll only ever have to write about it instead of talk about it. I was recently looking through an article about holiday hairstyles. I noticed a messy bun that was pulled off to the side and was surprised to see it called a chignon. Apparently I've been wearing this style a lot without ever even knowing it. According to dictionary.com a chignon is:
a large, smooth twist, roll, or knot of hair, worn by women at the nape of the neck or the back of the head.
