Why Do We Eat Turkey on Thanksgiving?

I had never thought of this question until today. It was always just something that was done, even though I really don't care for turkey. Its tradition, we have to do it. If only there had been digital slr cameras to really commemorate the first Thanksgiving table. So I went over to wikipedia to see what the first Thanksgiving dinner would've been like:

Modern Day Traditional Food:

Turkey
Pumpkin Pie
Cranberry Sauce
Stuffing and Rolls

First Thanksgiving Food:

Turkey which was any form of fowl
Boiled Pumpkin
Cranberries weren't around at the time
There wasn't flour in abundant supply at the time so there weren't bread products

With this definition I wonder if I can convince my family that we should have for chicken on Thanksgiving.

Just wondered this yesterday after trying to explain it to my 5 year old. I'm with you - forget the turkey. Personally I'd like to start a tradition of fried chicken!
