Donut folk lore

I'm trying to celebrate national donut day by sharing as many donut related anecdotes as possible. I really loved this explanation of donut day from wikipedia.

The Salvation Army "Lassies" often traveled to the front lines of World War I handing out a food, games, gifts, and a new confection that one day would be known as "doughnuts". The ring-shaped pieces of dough were often cooked in hot oil right in the helmets of the American soldiers, known as "doughboys" fighting in the front lines.
