What Does the Lotus Symbolize?

I read in a catalog description that the lotus is a symbol of triumph over adversity. Granted, they were trying to sell me a lotus fountain at the time. The description was so beautiful that I almost bought it. I even checked in the back of the catalog for some kind of bibliography. I think this officially marks the first time I've used the word bibliography.

So I headed over to wikipedia to find out if this was true & exactly what kind of adversity the lotus has overcome. I typed in lotus & was met with an entire page of links from Nelumbo lutea, (don't know what that is) to computer games. I was faced with articles about everything except the best diet pills. I did however learn that in The Odyssey by Homer the lotus tree caused a pleasant drowsiness. One of the not so great parts about moving around so much in high school was that every new school seemed to be reading The Odyssey. I probably read this book five times & it has absolutely no relevance to me today. So, I'm just going to take the catalog's description at face value, because how cool is it that anything symbolizes the triumph of beauty over adversity?

I would try a florist website. Once upon a time, I had a book that gave the meaning behind every flower you might give. I don't recall much from that book. I'll have to search around and see what I find.

this is because a lotus flower has to grow up from the mud at the bottom a pond and through the murky waters before it can blossom at the top. This can be taken to symbolize overcoming adversity and coming out of it strong and beautiful.
