Coriolis Effect

One of my favorite episodes of The Simpsons features Bart calling Australia to see if the toilets drain in the opposite direction. Yes, I learn my scientific facts from The Simpsons. I also learn dating tips, marriage tips, forming a 90's grunge band tips & pretty much everything else short of business performance management software recommendations from The Simpsons. It's so important to continue one's education, even after college.

I looked this up & found that it was called the Coriolis Effect. I also found that the Coriolis Effect involves lots of complicated math that I really can't understand. However, the way the toilet drains has to due with the direction the toilet flushes in & since most toilets flush in the same direction, the Simpsons may have been wrong on this one. I'll have to call Australia just to make sure.

Let's ask Allie which way her sink draining water spins. Because you're right about the toilets - they'll flush based on how the water is pushed. But the bathtub or sink...when that's draining, it's up to good old gravity and earth rotation.
