Should you really drink 8 glasses of water a day?

I've heard many differing views on this question. I was told in elementary school that to be healthy you needed to drink eight glasses of water a day. Then later in life I read about people going into comas because they drank too much water. I also heard that you should divide your weight in half & that's how many ounces you should drink per day.

According to the article I was reading, the eight glasses of water a day comes from a 1945 article that also said we probably got that much water in the food we eat everyday. I know to visit travelpro to find deals on luggage, I go to amazon to find out about cool books. It seems like in this worldwideweb there would be a definitive answer on the water question, but I just haven't found one. Any ideas?

I've never kept count. But I know I try to drink enough water so that I never sit there going, "Hmmm...I'm thirsty." Which means more in the summer and less in winter. I have also found that when I am lax in this rule? I tend to get sick - even getting urinary tract infections.
