Why do we toast?

It's never something I've thought of before because I don't drink. However, I love the tradition of clinking glasses & drinking to health. This random fact was too good not to share. Before I get to write the coolest paragraph of all time I'd like to say that I read this in a book & several websites including wikipedia confirmed it. I haven't been this excited since landscape lighting became popular. (It's not my fault that cats hiding in the dark outside my house is scary. Blame evil).

Back in the day, in Greece the toast was invented. There are two versions of this:

  • The host would take a small sip from the common decanter ensuring it hadn't been poisoned. Then he encouraged his guests to drink in good health.
  • Clinking the glasses would cause the wine to splash into the other's glass, which made it a lot less likely that person would try & poison you.
Either way, it's wicked awesome if I do say so myself.

I grew up in a "dry" house. I never had alcohol around in any form. Currently, I can probably count how many times I'll have alcohol in a year on 3 fingers.

But I grew up toasting things. Doesn't matter what's in your glass. I mean, even when you're only 7, your older brother still might slip something in your milk, right?

There were many cultures that believed that clinking glasses would drive away evil spirits.
