London Fog Facts

TV makes me care about things that I usually wouldn't care about. I was watching Mad Men when one of the characters said that there was no London fog. The fog was just dust from the coal mines, a product of the industrial revolution. I thought surely this could not be true. Imagine the skin care products that would be needed. Every time London is depicted in a cartoon, it is foggy. They named raincoats after it. I headed over wikipedia to look it up after my original search just brought up more Mad Men quotes.

I looked it up and this phenomenon is also called Pea Soup which is used to describe the yellowish thick fog. In A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett it said the fog was so thick that they turned on the street lamps. All I remember from A Little Princess is that all girls are princesses. You can say there is no London fog, but you’ll have to argue with the cartoon people.

I like everything you write. You are insightful, witty and your words often make me chuckle.
I particularly like this information about the London fog, well... because I live in London and we learned all about it at school. Perhaps I am one of the odd few who occasionally wonders if the fog/smog will make an unwelcome return. For instance when we had our heaviest snowfall in decades at the beginning of the year, even when that snow had dissipated the air remained unusually fog like and it got me worried and thinking a lot about smog and pea soup and what it would be like to live in a world where you could not see anything much in front of you or where you were going.
Luckily London is now back to its good old self again and I am thankful for that.
Keep writing. I am so glad I stumbled across your site in much the same way as I stumbled across Gilmore Girls. Like you I am an avid fan.
I wish you strength in dealing with your Fibromyalgia. I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and know just how hard it can be.
