I have cherries, but no cherry pitter. I was going to freeze some cherries because I'm super domestic. I don't anticipate having cherries again because they are expensive so I don't want to go out and buy a cherry pitter. I really need to check out
free online auctions for kitchen gadgets. Besides, I'd have to go to a store and I want to eat cherries now. I thought 'Oh this is one of those things that the internet can help me with'. I am not advocating any of these methods because well they sound dangerous. Here are some ways to pit cherries without a cherry pitter that I'm too scared to try myself:

Use a straw and a narrow-necked bottle. A beer bottle would do, but I used a juice bottle. Place the cherry on the bottle's opening and press the straw down thru the cherry into the bottle neck. Voila! The pit falls into the bottle and you have a pitted cherry. Several caveats however - wear an apron with a bib or old clothes because the cherry juice squirts everywhere. I have spots on my Joy of Cooking that was open at the time I did the pitting. Countertop and my apron were spotted, but it only took me 15 minutes to pit 3 lbs of cherries. Not too bad for a novice!
