Why do doctors wear white coats?

I've never really thought about this, it's just something that doctors wear. However, I was watching Ace of Cakes & they were making a doctor replica & someone asked if they got the coat length right. Apparently, different positions in a hospital will earn you a different length of white coat. I guess the coats are to protect you while doing lab work, but does white really seem like the right color for that?

Through my extensive research I've found that students wear short coats that they hate. Full fledged doctors wear longer coats. I've always just told the difference between medical students & doctors from who seems in control & who looks a little scared. As a side note, some teaching hospitals will provide extra coats to students that forget theirs. I don't know how I feel about getting medical advice from someone who can't remember to bring a jacket.

cool idea..well, i was also intrigued..but in my opinion, they are wearing white coats to project a clean image as being doctors/med students..there..
