I'm not a scientist. Usually I just look at the autumn colors & think "Wow. Pretty. I like the red leaves. Those are leaves right? It's not fruit like on Mulberry trees?" Now is a good time for me to revisit third grade science & ask "Why do leaves change colors?"
Leaves get their green color from a pigment called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll captures the sun's rays & turns them into simple sugars to feed the plant. Over time, the chlorophyll breaks down. Starting in late summer the "veins" of the leaf close up, & water & mineral intake is reduced. The chlorophyll level falls. Well, it's partly chlorophyll & partly the fact that red trees are pretty.
