What does America mean?

No, I'm not going to wax poetic here. I'm just not a poetic person. However, I thought I should write a few random facts posts about the United States seeing as it's Independence Day & all.

The word America was first used in about 1507 by a German Cartographer named Martin Waldseemuller. The name was derived from the Latinized version of the name of the explorer Amerigo Vespucci. It is in the feminine form because apparently all of the other continents have feminine names in Latin.

Another theory is that it was named after the Amerrique district in Nicaragua which was synonymous with the word gold. So basically, we don't know what the word America means, but it sure is pretty.
