What is an Impala?

Several of my friends and family members own Impala cars. Suddenly in the middle of the night I woke up wondering if an Impala was an actual animal known for mid priced luxury sedan qualities. Yes, that is the kind of stuff that I worry about. A quick google search revealed that impalas are African antelope. No idea why the car company chose to use that name because I really don't think they look similar.
