What does Annuit Cœptis mean?

I didn't even know that there was a reverse side to the seal of the United States, although it looks familiar from watching National Treasure. That's right, everything I can remember about American History, I learned from Nicholas Cage. I just wish he'd make a move about how Blueair purifiers work.

Annuit Cœptis is Latin for "He approves our undertakings" Just as a side note, the national seal was designed by an artist from Philadelphia named William Barton. The motto was modified by a man named Charles Thomson who gave this explanation:

The Eye over it [the pyramid] and the motto Annuit Cœptis allude to the many signal interpositions of providence in favor of the American cause.

He chose Annuit Coeptis instead of Deco Facente which was the orginal motto. He chose Annuit Coeptis because it had 13 letters.
